The Town Hall
The Town Hall is located on Stora torget, ’The Big Square’. It is said to be the smallest town hall in Sweden. It is probably the third town hall that stands in this place. The building was built by Mayor Erik Kihlman in the 18th century. The town's residents contributed timber and funding to the construction. Kihlman designed the structure and decorated it with furniture and paintings, which are still there today.

The town hall was inaugurated on Pentecost in 1744, after four years of construction. The fourth and final great fire in Sigtuna hit the town the day after the inauguration. The fire spread across the town and affected many households. Luckily, the town hall survived.

The Municipal Court gathered weekly in the town hall to make decisions about the municipality. Consisting of the mayor and two to four councilmen, they passed decisions on matters like the lighting of the square and maintenance of the city streets. The court also settled criminal cases. The town hall used to have a guardroom with two holding cells for prisoners, one for women and one for men.

The square in front of the town hall has served as a meeting point for hundreds of years. Here, people have gathered for markets, competitions and concerts, or to collect water from one of the town’s water pumps. Believe it or not, even animals have grazed in front of the town hall!

In 1947, the municipal court met for the last time in the town hall. Today, the building is part of Sigtuna Museum and is seasonally open to visitors. The council chamber is a popular place to get married.

Have you seen a town hall smaller than this in Sweden?
